San Diego State University is now home to the new Institute for the Arts, Humanities, and Social Justice (IAHSJ). Launched in May 2021 and ramping up its work throughout 2022, the new interdisciplinary Institute serves as a hub for the arts and social justice across the University and in the community.

In 2015, the Arts Alive initiative was established to help connect the rest of campus with the arts, promoting arts events and classes. As the initiative has grown, the goal has evolved into making the creative arts more accessible, inclusive, and an integral part of a comprehensive education at San Diego State.

SAN DIEGO– Diversity, equity and inclusion has been an uphill battle in the media industry but that is starting to change. On April 6 more than 100 media professionals and students joined the fight to push the status quo at the 6th annual Allen H. Center Distinguished Lecture in Public Relations.

Courses in the Interdisciplinary Collaborative Teaching Program give student high-impact opportunities for collaboration.

The student-run PSFA College Council will host alumnus Cecil Magpuri speaking to students about entrepreneurship in the creative fields, thanks to an award from the Student Success Fee Fund.

In a collaboration between Arts Alive SDSU and the Office for Restorative Practices, School of Art and Design MFA student Kristi Williams has installed her thesis project, Circular Dialogue Benches, outside the Chinese Cultural Center in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts.

San Diego State University Art and Design Professor Yin Yu, in collaboration with Dr. Surabhi Bhutani, is designing wearable technology for olfactory, smell training to combat loss of smell after a COVID-19 infection. In a crossover between art and science, the wearable tech will help individuals suffering from loss of smell through olfactory training.

Janis McKay has been appointed dean of the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts, effective July 3.

From the time we are newborns and into our senior years, touch plays a primary role in our physical and mental well-being. Its absence can result in what psychologists call “skin hunger,” a term that inspired the title of a production choreographed by San Diego State University dance professor Joseph Alter.
