Learning Strategies Tutoring FAQ

The Basics: Start Here

In appointments, we can work together on:

  • Reading assignments
  • Writing assignments
  • Research projects (including theses & capstones)
  • Creative works
  • Presentations
  • Organization & scheduling
  • Note taking
  • Test preparation
  • Anything else you have questions about related to your learning!

Only graduate students, majors, and minors in the College of Professional Studies & Fine Arts can book appointments.

If you’re not a PSFA major or minor, I’m happy to be a friendly face and connect you with the people in your college who are available to support you. Please email me at [email protected].

You choose whether to meet in-person or on Zoom. You will get the link for online appointments when you book here.

All appointments are 60 minutes to allow sufficient time for working through your assignments and questions together. Before you leave, we’ll make an action plan with next steps.

All appointments are individual (one student and me, your tutor).

Please bring any materials we might need to work through your assignments and questions together, which might include:

  • Syllabi for courses you want to discuss
  • Assignments, including study guides and instructions for papers
  • Books, articles, or other sources you are reading
  • Special equipment (e.g. graphing calculator or software)
  • Graded assignments with your professors’ feedback on them, if you want to share those with me

It is best to bring a computer or tablet instead of a smartphone if you have one, because a smartphone screen is often too small for two people to see at the same time.

If you are a disabled student and would like to request accommodations for learning strategies tutoring appointments, it is your responsibility to contact Student Disability Services (or SDS) at (619) 594-6473. To avoid any delay in the receipt of your accommodations, you should contact SDS as soon as possible.

Please note that, as your tutor, I cannot provide accommodations based upon disability until I have received an accommodation letter from Student Ability Success Center. Your cooperation is appreciated!

To protect the privacy of your student records, I will not share with faculty or staff that you are participating in learning strategies tutoring without your written consent.

I really like it when you choose to tell people--your friends, classmates, professors, staff, or anyone else--about our appointments, though!

If your professor would like proof that you attended an appointment, please ask me to email them a session summary.

Making Appointments

Graduate students, majors, and minors in the College of PSFA can make appointments here.

In-person appointments will be held in my office (Professional Studies & Fine Arts Building Room 213).

Tutoring sessions are by appointment only.

Students may make a maximum of one 60-minute appointment per week, because there are thousands of students in our college and only 1 of me!

You can schedule an appointment as far in advance as the end of the semester and as little as 2 hours ahead of time.

Appointments can be canceled or rescheduled using the links provided by Zoom scheduler when you book.

After 2 no shows or late cancellations, I will reach out to schedule a brief conversation to make sure you are safe. I’ll ensure your basic needs are being met and we’ll talk about how to get on track and be able to make it to your appointments.

I do not provide private, fee-based tutoring, unfortunately.  If you are looking for a private tutor for a K-12 student, I recommend you ask the student’s school staff for resources.
