Bill was not only a former School of Communication Director (2001-2005), but also a former SDSU Senate Chair, a faculty member in the School of Journalism and Media Studies, and an administrator in two temporary AVP roles that supported faculty. In addition to the impact he had on SDSU students, faculty, and programs, Bill was also highly involved in the National Communication Association and the Western States Communication Association, having served as an Associate Director of NCA and President of WSCA. His impact on our School, the SDSU campus, and in the discipline of communication will continue even as we miss his physical presence. As Dr. Brian Spitzberg recently mused, “Over time Bill wore many hats across the discipline, and sought to serve in all of them, and always in as collaborative a manner as possible.”

We will host a memorial panel for Bill at the 2026 convention of the Western States Communication Association, to be held at the Westin Gaslamp Quarter from February 27th-March 2nd. Please join us there if you are able.
