The San Diego State University School of Art and Design presents Crossing the Line at the University Art Gallery through Thursday, May 4, 2023.

Crossing the Line features the artwork of 29 local artists, faculty, and alumni of the School of Art and Design, whose work examines the notion of boundaries and borders. The work in this exhibition represents each artist’s expansive approach and perspective on the idea of divides.

The artists interpret these ideas in relation to material or process, social and cultural expectations, or socio-political factors. Featured artwork expands across different materials and modes of expression to display the artist’s lived experience and challenge our own beliefs.

“For this exhibition, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to reach out to our immediate and national network to represent faculty and alumni that span decades of history at the School of Art and Design,” said Chantel Paul, galleries and exhibitions coordinator. “As a result, Crossing the Line represents the School’s dedication to both craft and theory with a selection that ranges from sculpture, ceramics, textile, and photography to jewelry, metalsmithing, multimedia, painting, and printmaking,” said Paul.

The exhibition is juried by Guusje Sanders, associate curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego, and Alexandro Segade, artist and associate professor at UCSD.

Crossing the Line is on view March 7 - May 4, 2023, at the University Art Gallery School of Art + Design Art North Building off the 4th-Floor Courtyard. Gallery Hours are Tuesday – Thursday from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and by appointment. Admission is free. A reception with the artists and jurors will be held on Thursday, May 2nd from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
