Student Art and Design Exhibition Brings Honors and Cash Awards

February 8, 2022
24th Annual Student Award Exhibition

Since 1999, the SDSU Student Award Exhibition has demonstrated the university’s support of artistic excellence and diversity in student artwork. The annual exhibition features a juried collection of upper-division and graduate student artwork. In addition to the honor of being selected to participate in the show, the Student Award Exhibition (SAE) offers students opportunities to win cash awards, a solo gallery exhibition, and to have their work included in the University’s permanent collection.

This year’s Student Award Exhibition will run from Thursday, Feb. 10 through Thursday, Mar. 3, 2022, in the Flor y Canto and Everett Gee Jackson Galleries at the SDSU School of Art and Design. The exhibition is free and open to the public. In accordance with San Diego State University’s COVID-19 policies, all individuals are required to wear facial coverings regardless of vaccination status. Additional information on the university’s COVID-19 protocols can be found on the dedicated website.

Students whose work is selected are eligible to receive cash awards from sponsors across the University including President Adela de la Torre, Provost Hector Ochoa, Dean Peggy Shannon (PSFA), Dean Monica Casper (College of Arts and Letters), Interim Dean George Belch (Fowler College of Business), Dean Eugene Olevsky (College of Engineering), Interim Dean Karen Myers-Bowman (Global University), Gerald W. Fackler, Aztec Shops, SDSU Art Council Ambassadors, and the SDSU School of Art and Design.

In addition to cash prizes associated with each award, student artwork chosen by on-campus award sponsors will be permanently displayed.

Award sponsor, Art Produce, a local Gallery in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego, will be selecting a student to receive a solo art exhibition in the coming year.

Arzu Ozkal, interim director of the School of Art and Design is eager to expose the University community to student talent, and the SAE provides a wonderful opportunity. “The SAE has become a significant point of pride for the School of Art and Design, featuring some of the best works made by students in our program,” said Ozkal. “It showcases a diverse range of research interests, media, and excellent craftsmanship. And, it gives us an opportunity to celebrate students’ works and achievements with the community both on and off-campus.”

The prestige of having their artwork selected is appreciated by the students.

“I was so honored to have been recognized,” said previous Jury Award winner and graduate student, Sepideh Shamloufard. “My SAE award was not just about the validation of my work, it was a celebration of what I have done with the help and support of my mentors, faculty, and family. I think this award inspired me to represent a better version of myself.”

Work in the Student Award Exhibition represents a broad variety of media and practice. The SDSU School of Art + Design has degree programs with emphases in Art History, Ceramics, Furniture and Woodworking, Jewelry and Metalsmithing, Graphic Design, Interior Architecture, Multimedia, Painting and Printmaking, and Sculpture.

Accepted artwork will be on display through March 3, 2022. The annual awards ceremony will take place on March 3, 2022, at 4:00 pm at the School of Art and Design’s fourth-floor courtyard followed by a reception at 5:00 pm, and will include presentations by Interim Director Ozkal and other campus leaders.
