To honor Scott Guhin, alumnus of San Diego State University, friends and family contributed close to $50,000 to establish the Scott Guhin Endowed Scholarship in the School of Art and Design. This scholarship will provide important annual scholarships in perpetuity.

This scholarship will continue Scott’s legacy of excellence in art by supporting the next generation of student artists. His fund will support talented and dedicated students at San Diego State University.

Scott, originally born and raised in the Syracuse, NY area, was a resident of Oceanside, CA for more than 20 years. His work has been exhibited with D Gallery, Phantom Gallery and Arts Alive over the years. He is also represented in private collections internationally. Scott was a regular participant in the Oceanside banner project, contributing multiple banners that hung from street poles in the city.

In his words, “I have always been mesmerized by color and light. My challenge has been to capture a sense of light in all of my pieces. I work large format (average size 4ft. x 6ft.) acrylic on canvas. Inspiration is all around me and so I paint things familiar to me: my garden and local landscape have been my central theme.”

While attending San Diego State’s School of Art, Scott spent a year abroad in Europe; six months studying in Florence and then traveling throughout Europe. After graduation he settled in Northern California starting in San Francisco, moving to West Marin County and on to Sonoma before coming to Southern California.

Scott was a Graduate Gemologist at GIA where he worked for over 25 years, retiring in January 2017 as Lab Senior Manager. While with GIA, hetraveled extensively to labs in NYC, Mumbai-India, Johannesburg-South Africa, Gaborone-Botswana and Bangkok-Thailand. Scott maintained friendships with staff in many of these places, often cooking for them to satisfy his other interests: friends and food.
