The School of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS) at San Diego State University has chosen the next student leaders for its independent, student-run media organizations: Bella Biunno and Calista Stocker as co-editors-in-chief of The Daily Aztec and Sammi Thomas as the new general manager of KCR College Radio.

Each brings years of experience and a strong passion for student media. They plan to lead with purpose and vision as they step into their new roles.

For Biunno and Stocker, the path to this position has been years in the making.

“I was inspired to apply for Editor-in-Chief because I’ve been involved with publications and journalism for nearly ten years,” Biunno said. “This role embodies the values of change, leadership, advocacy and providing excellent content production for our readers, as well as mentorship to our writers.”

Stocker, who joined The Daily Aztec at SDSU in 2022, shares a similar sense of purpose and preparation.

“My ultimate career goal is to become an editor for a major media outlet and this brings me a massive step closer,” Stocker said. “Being Editor-in-Chief means being the voice of the organization and making final decisions that shape our coverage.”

With their new positions, both leaders emphasized the need for collaboration within student-run organizations such as The Daily Aztec.

“Each individual involved plays a vital role in our operation,” Biunno said. “This isn’t just a club—it’s a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience and prepare for the ever-changing world of journalism.”

Stocker echoed that sentiment.

“I want to create a space where students feel comfortable speaking up, sharing ideas and knowing their voice matters.”

For Thomas, the new general manager of KCR College Radio, the role also centers on building a strong team.

“I was inspired to take on the role because of the incredible community KCR fosters,” she said. “The people of KCR are the most motivated, creative and talented people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing at SDSU.”

Thomas previously served as director of KCR’s Basement Beats, a live music and interview series. She plans to expand the station’s presence on and off campus.

“My vision is to attract more listeners to our live shows, create more opportunities for our members and collaborate with other creative groups on campus,” she said. “I also want to secure more press opportunities—concerts, festivals, you name it—so our members can gain real-world industry experience.”

As SDSU continues to evolve its media outlets, Biunno, Stocker and Thomas display the strong role student leaders have on the organizations. With their leadership, The Daily Aztec and KCR College Radio are looking forward to a year of growth and impact.
