Outstanding Student: Gina Vi Ferguson, School of Art and Design
Gina Vi Ferguson epitomized excellence and innovation in San Diego State University’s School of Art and Design. Her academic journey was marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a passion for making a positive impact in the world. Ferguson made her mark within SDSU's Interior Architecture program, driven by her passion for learning.
Reflecting on her journey, Ferguson credits Yin Yu as a significant influence. "Dr. Yin Yu is one of the most important reasons why I have succeeded in my experiences at SDSU. She has provided me such valuable information in the design field not only within school but applying design knowledge to the real world."
Throughout her time at SDSU, Ferguson immersed herself in SURP (SDSU Undergraduate Research Program), refining her research skills and learning resilience. She acknowledges the challenge of grappling with identity and belonging but affirms the importance of moving forward.
Participating in SURP was a defining experience for Ferguson. There, she developed a soft robotic device to aid individuals struggling with anxiety and depression. "I have always wanted to do good in the world, and help people. The SURP program allowed me to further the good I can do for people in need," Ferguson shared.
For incoming freshmen, Ferguson emphasizes the value of embracing failure as a path to growth. "It's okay to be afraid of failure," she advises. "If something does not work out or go the way you wanted it to, take it as an opportunity to grow from that situation."
Looking ahead, Ferguson hopes the Graduating Class of 2024 finds success and fulfillment in their careers. "Even if they do not continue in the field of their major, I hope they continue to strive to continue work that fulfills them,” she said.
