Arts Alive SDSU Announces Spring Discovery Series

Arts Alive SDSU has announced the Discovery Series for the spring 2022 semester which will include musical and contemporary theater, visual art, and music projects by SDSU students and faculty.

The Discovery Series captures the ways in which the arts intersect with the humanities and sciences to create an enriching interdisciplinary experience for SDSU students.

Arts Alive Spring Discovery Series Events 2022

“The Wolves,” Directed by Jesca Prudencio, School of Theatre, Television, and Film

The Discovery Series opens with “The Wolves,” a contemporary play written by Pulitzer Prize finalist, Sara DeLappe and directed for the SDSU mainstage by Professor Jesca Prudencio from the School of Theatre, Television, and Film. “The Wolves” profiles the lives and relationships of players on a women’s soccer team, exploring the challenges and triumphs they face on the field and in their personal lives. The stage production explores the relationship between sports and theater arts in a captivating coming of age story.

Performances of “The Wolves” will be held March 18-24. Event tickets are $17 for students and $20 for the general public.

“Postcard American Town,” Directed by Stephen Brotebeck, School of Theatre, Television, and Film

New musical, “Postcard American Town,” will hit SDSU’s mainstage in a world premiere performance directed by Professor Stephen Brotebeck from the School of Theatre, Television, and Film. The musical is an installment of both the Discovery Series and SDSU’s New Musical Initiative.

“Postcard American Town” follows a young woman as she encounters racial divisions in her seemingly picture-perfect town. The story follows her on her awakening to the importance of social activism. This musical written by Lynne Shankel and Crystal Skillman bridges art and activism by analyzing the impact of cultural discrimination.

“Postcard American Town” performances run from April 9 to May 5. Tickets are $17 for students and $20 for the general public.

The “Postcard American Town” panel discussion will take place Wednesday, April 27 at 10:00 a.m. The panel will feature playwrights Lynne Shankel and Crystal Skillman; Associate Director of the San Diego Repertory Theater Kim Heil; Stephen Brotebeck, and Robert Meffe of the SDSU Musical Theatre program, and Virginia Loh Hagan, Inaugural Director of the SDSU Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Center.

“Learning to Fly,” Organized by Michele Burgess, School of Art and Design

Visual art exhibition, “Learning to Fly” showcases a student book making project based on original designs by artists experiencing incarceration.

Focusing on transformation and restoration, this exhibit and dance performance is a collaboration with the Prison Arts Collective and the School of Music and Dance.

The exhibition will be open from April 25- May 3 and is free to attend.

The panel discussion for “Learning to Fly” will take place on Tuesday, April 26 at 4:00 p.m.

A reception for “Learning to Fly,” featuring a dance performance and closing ceremony is to take place on Tuesday, May 3.

Electronic Music Marathon, Organized by Chris Warren, School of Music and Dance

The final installment of the Spring Discovery series is the Electronic Music Marathon, organized by Professor Chris Warren of the School of Music and Dance. The Electronic Music Marathon is a four-hour immersive experience performed live by SDSU students.

Attendees can enjoy light shows and immersive video projections created by SDSU students while they listen. The Electronic Music marathon seamlessly blends the disciplines of music, visual arts, and technology, showcasing the way that scientific data can be communicated through music.

The Electronic Music Marathon will take place on Saturday, April 30 and is free to attend.
