As SDSU enters its third semester dictated by the pandemic, students’ struggle to stay motivated to learn is thematic. The College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts asked students from its schools for motivational ideas to launch a successful semester. Check out their insights throughout the month. Featured below is Rebecca Perez (School of Public Affairs senior).

Q1: What gets you through the day?

“Knowing that in a couple of months I will earn my bachelor’s degree not only for myself but for my community as well [gets me through the day]. As a first-generation college student, my diploma signifies a great accomplishment both for those who precede me and succeed me.”

Q2: If you had a motivational toolkit, what would be your favorite tool?

“My favorite tool would be my planner/Google Calendar because it helps me stay organized and on top of tasks I need to get done. When I cannot access my planner or google calendar, I feel overwhelmed because I am unable to see what I have going on.”

Q3: What are you grateful for?

“I am not only grateful for my family and community but for all of those who have made strides to make sure Latino/a’s and Chicana/o’s have the ability to pursue higher education despite all the barriers in place.”

Q4: What piece of advice is your go-to?

“Sometimes we try to run before we can walk but it’s important to remember that we don’t need to rush things, and it is ok to take things at your own pace.”

Q5: How do you stay mentally healthy?

“I take walks and soak up the sun because nature is a distraction.”

Q6: How do you stay resilient?

“I stay resilient by reminding myself that I am stronger than I think and knowing that there are people who are rooting for me even when I think I cannot accomplish something.”
