This fall, SDSU’s School of Public Affairs will welcome Dr. Madison Swayne as an Assistant Professor of City Planning.

Before coming to SDSU, Swayne earned her Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Development from the University of Southern California. She also received Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees in Environmental Studies from USC. Since then, she has worked in environmental consulting around Southern California.

Employing several methods in her research such as big data, automated computing methods, and primary data sources, Swayne seeks to explore the intersection of environmental justice and land use. Her research examines how urban form, real estate development, environmental policies, and nuisance continue to reproduce and exacerbate well-documented patterns of environmental injustice.

This fall, Swayne is slated to teach courses focusing on environmental planning, sustainable urbanism and land use, and environmental law.
