New SDSU Performing Arts District Presented at Virtual Town Hall

Dean Peggy Shannon, Dean of the SDSU College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) will host two Virtual Town Halls on May 6, and June 9, 2020, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m PST.

At each Town Hall, Shannon will present the proposed design concepts for the SDSU Performing Arts District, as well as timelines for construction, how the new facilities will support arts students, faculty, and patrons, and opportunities for supporting state-of-the-art technology for teaching and learning.

Shannon will be joined by HGA Architects who are currently working on this project.

“Throughout the last three months, a team of faculty and staff have met weekly with the project design and construction team. Attending the virtual town hall will offer a look at the current designs and plans. People will meet the architects, and hear directly from me about the exciting opportunities this renovation and new designs will afford PSFA,” said Shannon.

This project will impact all students, faculty, staff at SDSU because it will enable state-of-the-art performance training as well as a welcoming, creative environment for all, said Shannon.

About the Performing Arts District

In 2019, San Diego State University was awarded $37 million by the California State University (CSU) system to rebuild its aging theatre and build a new, more intimate Second State venue for the performing arts. These buildings will be at the center of the expanded and re-imagined Performing Arts District. HGA has been selected as the architect, with construction to begin in winter 2021.

“In addition to accessibility improvements, the entire area will be enhanced to create a Performing Arts District, with a new patron box office, a stand-alone, intimate and flexible second stage theater, and a world-class sound design lab,” said Shannon. “All of these structures will be distinct, separate, and accessible.”
