Bio

Tim Powell is an internationally recognized, Emmy award-winning filmmaker. In addition to working on over 350 episodes of network television for ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX, Tim worked as a producer and/or director for 12 series for the Discovery Channel and Discovery Networks. He also spent 5 years producing and directing for the documentary series, National Geographic “Explorer.” He has a long history with Walt Disney Productions and Disney Entertainment, including live shows and network television specials. He has travelled all over the world, filming documentaries in 25 countries. He has multiple Emmy award nominations for prime-time, national, and regional programs, with 4 Emmy award wins, including Emmy awards for documentary films and live directing (NATAS-PSW). Tim also has significant experience in theatrical feature films, including editing three feature films and directing “Riding with James Dean,” released worldwide. He also directed the concert sequences for the theatrically released concert documentary (AMC theatres) Como Un Sueno, featuring Gerardo Ortiz. He recently worked as a supervising producer for MGM on an Amazon Prime original series, and two seasons of a series for the National Geographic Channel. Although he remains active in the film and television industries, he focuses on recording and streaming live events in the San Diego area. Working with his advanced students, he produces a concert television series for KPBS-TV entitled “Live at the Belly Up,” currently in its 7th season. He works with performing arts organizations, such as San Diego Ballet, San Diego Opera, and the Old Globe, to bring performing arts events to a television audience. He has brought students with him on professional productions to China, London, British Columbia, and Fiji. He has a Masters degree in film production, and a PhD specializing in Instructional Design for Online Learning.
