Carlton Daniel Jr. joins the School of Theatre, Television and Film
The San Diego State University School of Theatre, Television, and Film is proud to welcome Carlton Daniel Jr., MFA, as the new Assistant Professor of Screenwriting.
Carlton Daniel Jr. is a writer-director born in Cleveland, OH. Grounded in the mundane and extraordinary experiences of Black and LGBTQIA+ American life, Daniel’s body of work explores themes of coming-of-age, be/longing, and love.
Working across genres of drama, romance, and horror, their award-winning directorial debut ‘Monogamish’screened at over 20 festivals internationally, premiering at Outfest LA. Their recent short ‘Homegoing’ screened at Academy and BAFTA-qualifying film festivals including, American Black Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Palm Springs International ShortFest, Inside Out Toronto, and Outfest LA.
Daniel is currently developing a feature-length film of ‘Homegoing’ which was selected for the Outfest Screenwriting Lab and AT&T & Tribeca Film Festival’s Untold Stories. Daniel was a semifinalist for the NewVoices Filmmaker Grant at NewFest and a semifinalist for AFI Conservatory’s DWW+. They most recently wrote and directed an episode of 20th Digital Studio’s horror anthology series ‘Bite Size Halloween’ which premiered at Urbanworld Film Festival and is streaming now on Hulu.
Daniel is currently in post-production on their latest short film, “Fly,” which is scheduled to premiere in 2025. Daniel earned their MFA from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts.
Daniel’s addition promises to inspire and elevate the next generation of screenwriters, fostering a creative and dynamic learning environment for SDSU students.
