Emerging Filmmakers Showcase Debuts latest Wally! Award winning student film
Join The School of Theatre, Television, and Film as they debut this year’s student work
The SDSU School of Theatre, Television, and Film presents the Fall 2022 Emerging Filmmakers Showcase at the Student Union Theatre Wednesday Dec. 14 and Thursday Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The showcase will feature top student work from this semester, including Wally! Award winning short film, Discharged.
“The film festival is a great way to see how student films evolve over the years. While all of the student films exercise good technical abilities and storytelling, it is still fun to see the gap between an intro cinematography class vs the thesis 560 class,” says Discharged student director Bridget Tayor. “I love seeing how much we progress over the years.”
The Wally! Award, developed by SDSU alumnus and Emmy award winning producer, Wally Schlotter, is granted to the winners of the pitch program offered to students in TTF advanced filmmaking course. Winners of the award receive a grant to help produce their short film.
“The Wally! Award was massively instrumental in helping us make the project that we had in our minds. With those funds, we were able to secure a really incredible location that we really wouldn't have been able to get without proper funding,” says Discharged Director of Photography, Alex Lorey.
Throughout their time at the School of Theatre, Television, and Film, student filmmakers take a hands-on approach in storytelling and technical filmmaking. Taylor shares her insights on what it takes to be a successful film student at SDSU.
“It takes a lot of persistence and willingness to talk to new people and try new things,” says Taylor. “My four years at SDSU have given me a portfolio and a network of people to connect to and lean on. Discharged is the culmination of me and my team’s creative efforts throughout the years, and we couldn’t be more excited for the SDSU community to see it.”
Tickets to the Emerging Filmmakers showcase are open to students and the general public for $10 and can be purchased at the School of Theatre, Television, and Film website.
