VDAY-SDSU Makes Space for New Voices with "Raise the Vibration"
Valentine’s Day is popularly associated with flowers and candy and paper hearts. But for many it is also known as V-DAY, which is a time to spotlight women’s experiences of things like sexuality, puberty, body image, domestic violence, and assault. Since Eve Ensler premiered the play The Vagina Monologues in 1996, groups all over the country, including on hundreds of college campuses, celebrate V-DAY by raising money for organizations that support women. They also often stage some or all of The Vagina Monologues. SDSU has had a V-DAY organization since 2011.
After almost ten consecutive years of celebrating empowerment through The Vagina Monologues, the V-DAY SDSU organizers felt it was time to create something new that amplifies voices and identities from the community in order to shift the conversation to topics and concerns that are more relevant to experiences faced today. Enter this year’s V-Day SDSU production, Raise the Vibration.
Raise the Vibration consists entirely of student and supporter-written monologues, scenes, and poems that explore the multifaceted universe composed in the deceptively simple term “the feminine experience.” All proceeds collected through ticket sales, merch sales, and donations will go to this year’s beneficiary, Shakti Rising, a social change organization transforming the lives of women, girls, and the wider community all over the United States with a focus on healing, leadership, and education.
Performance dates are March 5th, 6th, and 7th at 7:00 p.m. PST. Tickets are available via EventBrite at https://tinyurl.com/RTV2021. Merchandise can be found on the show’s local San Diego partners website, https://www.theartofjoy.net/ under the V-DAY SDSU tab. Donations will also be accepted via Venmo @VDAYSDSU.
