International Scholarships

PSFA encourages every student to engage in study abroad experiences, and strives to make it a reality for everyone. There are several opportunities for scholarship awards for students wishing to study abroad. Below are some of the many scholarships available to SDSU students. SDSU Based study abroad Scholarships



Sara Stelzer Study Abroad Scholarship

The Sara Stelzer study abroad scholarship was established in 2015 to help financially deserving students participate in an international experience. The College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts will award this scholarship twice a year to students who have financial need. Award amounts range from $500 to $1000 per student. Students must be in academic good standing to apply.

SDSU Associated Students Study Abroad Scholarship

SDSU students who have applied, or have been accepted, to participate in a study abroad program outside the United States are encouraged to apply for the Associated Students Study Abroad Scholarship. Students who will be conducting research outside the United States are eligible to receive the scholarship. Students who will be studying or conducting research in a U.S. territory also are eligible to apply. Application materials will be reviewed by a committee composed primarily of current SDSU students, with an Associated Students staff member serving as the scholarship committee chairperson.

International Studies Minor Scholarship for Study Abroad

SDSU students have a number of options for a Study Abroad Experience, and there is also the opportunity to get an International Studies Minor from the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts. The International Studies Minor Scholarship for Study Abroad will help students access this important international education experience.

Joyce M. Gattas Scholarship for Internships and International Experiences

College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) Emeritae Dean Joyce Gattas established a scholarship to support her vision and commitment for PSFA undergraduate and graduate students to globally educated and have access to invaluable international study abroad and internship experiences.

Jim Sanders Media and Leadership Scholarship

The Jim Sanders Media and Leadership Scholarship will award one $2,500 scholarship for the 2020-2021 academic year to students who have an interest in journalism, news media, or communication. Applicants must aspire to a career in news media, but can be interested in any aspect of the industry including engineering, sales, production (audio, video and sound editing, etc.), graphic design, or human resources and have a desire to be a leader in journalism, media, or communication. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.

Boren Awards for International Study

Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Rainbow Scholarship (LGBT Students)

This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender students who aims to participate in a high-quality, rigorous education abroad program. Applicants must meet general Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) scholarship eligibility requirements & preferences. Students interested in being considered for this annual scholarship should indicate this through their application forms.

Rotary Scholarship

From scholarships to a local music camp to full graduate fellowships, Rotary offers many ways to support your education. For young leaders who embody our belief of service above self, many local Rotary clubs provide academic scholarships for undergraduate, graduate, and even international study to students in their area.

DiversityAbroad Scholarship

DiversityAbroad.com has partnered with several organizations to offer study abroad grants and scholarships to Minority/Low-Income students.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia

Students interested in studying in Asia and have financial need should apply to the Freeman Asia Scholarship. Freeman Asia provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation and books. Applications for spring are due in early November of each year.

German Chancellor Fellowship

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s German Chancellor Fellowship Program is targeted at university graduates from the United States, Russia, China, Brazil and India who have an international outlook and initial leadership experience. It addresses prospective decision-makers, multipliers and thought leaders from a broad range of professional fields such as politics, public administration and business as well as society and culture. The fellowships give them the opportunity to spend a year in Germany networking with other prospective leaders from abroad, who are also sponsored by the Humboldt Foundation, and to explore new solutions to the global issues of our times. With this programme Germany once again presents itself as a destination of choice for intercultural dialogue and as a meeting place for the international leaders of tomorrow.

Phi Kappa Phi Undergraduate Study Abroad Grants

Are you planning to study abroad and interested in scholarship funding? You may apply for a study abroad grant from the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, even if you are not a member of Phi Kappa Phi!

The Mundt Memorial Peace Scholarships

These scholarships offer the opportunity to gain intercultural experience, contribute to the San Diego community, provide assistance to new immigrants, strengthen your resume, and enhance your Peace Corps application. The scholarships are through a generous gift of the Mundt Memorial Trust to the SDSU Peacemakers Foundation. The Mundt Trust seeks to encourage SDSU students to have an impact in the community and to consider serving as Peace Corps volunteers through this scholarship-internship program. Intercultural learning and community volunteer experience significantly increase the likelihood of a successful Peace Corps application.

Critical Language Scholarship

CLS, a program of the U.S. Department of State, is an 8-10 week fully-funded summer intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. Both undergraduate and graduate U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.

Phi Kappa Phi ( PKP) Study Abroad Scholarship for $1000

The application deadline is March 15, 2020. SDSU students are eligible if they have a GPA of 3.75 or higher at the time of application, and are studying abroad on a program that begins between May 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021.
