Overview

This program explores the nature of intercultural communication including an exploration of the basic principles of mindful communication and introspection and how to apply them. Woven throughout is an in-depth look at the culture of Thailand. Through class lectures, guest presentations, and visits to sites in Thailand, students will explore the nature of intercultural communication, including all related terminology and theory; will actively practice and participate in intercultural competence; will become more aware of the surrounding culture through observations, interviews, and intercultural contact; will understand the intersection between mindfulness and communication competence; and will learn and practice introspection and self-reflexivity.

Overview

Through guided tours, field trips, and first-hand experiences, this program explores the dynamic history and vibrant, colorful culture of Edinburgh and examines key moments in British and Scottish histories in the University of Edinburgh, one of Scotland’s ancient universities. In addition to our lectures and readings. we will view a variety of media including documentary and popular films, performances, podcasts, and music and ponder how they not only reflect, but reinforce, and reframe Scottish and British life and identity.

Italy Program through Cimba

Overview

Cimba operates a study abroad program in a small Northern Italian town about an hour northwest of Venice. The program includes coursework in business, communication studies, and media studies. Courses are taught in English by U.S. professors using a global perspective. The program also offers opportunities to study conversational Italian, participate in leadership development, and learn about the thriving entrepreneurial spirit of the Veneto region of Italy. Both semester-long and summer programs are offered, and these programs are scheduled so that there are opportunities both for study and for travel.

A newly established program with SDSU, CUMC is located in southern China near Shanghai, a fast developing international city and cultural and economic center in southern China.

Communication University of China

Overview

A newly established program focused on media and communication. One of the top universities in China, CUC is located in the capital city and culture center of Beijing. They offer many courses in English.

Tianjin University of Finance and Economics (TUFE)

Overview

A formal exchange program established since 2000. TUFE is one of the oldest universities offering finance, economics and business education in China. It’s located in Tianjin - the important economic center in north China, 90 minutes from Beijing.

Wang Foundation Tsinghua Summer Service-Learning Program

Overview

This program has been very successful and is becoming one of the most attractive international programs to SDSU students. The program offers 20 scholarships to SDSU students each year. Recruitment is typically in January to late March.

Criminal Justice in China

Overview

A two-week criminal law course comparing China's criminal justice system with that of the United States. The course will cover the Chinese Constitution, the criminal code, and the code of criminal procedure. Students are required to participate in daily one-on-one half-hour Chinese language training - no academic credit - to help them prepare for their daily experiences. The program ends in Xiamen and then the group proceeds to Shanghai for two nights and departs from there. The information session for this program is on Wednesday, February 7 from 3:00-3:45 PM in PSFA 160.

Host Information

Xiamen University was founded in the 1920s and today has modern classrooms with the latest technology for teaching. It is a showplace for national and international visitors and welcomes many international students who come to learn Chinese. SDSU and Xiamen University are linked through the SDSU Confucius Institute.

Sustainability, Global Citizenship, and Community Empowerment in Ecuador

Overview

Engage in enriching, hands-on community experiences in sustainability. Participants live with local families in the Amazon jungle, the Andes mountains, and the Galapagos Islands, and undertake life-changing service activities and coursework relating to cultural and ecological conservation and sustainable business development. Exposure to multidisciplinary approaches to sustainability, including health, economics, education, gender studies, ecology, politics, business, tourism, hospitality, and more. Students will enroll in a total of 6 units. Volunteer Teaching in China

During this program, the Voluntary Teaching Program groups American, British, and other international students to teach English and provide culture lectures and intercultural communication exercises to local students of all ages in rural settings throughout China. Sustainable Development and Conservation in Baja California Sur

Students will participate in research-based service learning that examines civic problems at the local level through carefully constructed experiences. Through hands-on learning and community interactions, students will have the opportunity to make interconnections with local residents and interdisciplinary perspectives, and drive solutions that are socially just, culturally appropriate and feasible. Students will be in Los Cabos, La Paz and Loreto, Baja California. Art in France

Eva Struble

Overview

This program is taught by SDSU Professor Eva Struble at the Marchutz School of Art at IAU College in France. It deals with concepts that begin with basic painting principles and a cover a range of painting issues into the advanced level. Assignments will include portraiture, landscape plein aire painting, and painting outdoors in the town of Aix-en-Provence. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced students will work on related assignments at different levels of complexity and sophistication. Some students will encounter assignments for the first time and others will practice familiar assignments with increasing levels of refinement (ie. Plein aire painting). The course includes museum and outdoor painting excursions. Prior painting experience is not required. SDSU has been offering courses at IAU since 2016.

Host Information

IAU College was founded in 1957 and is one of the oldest and largest education abroad programs in Europe. The Marchutz School of Fine Arts is housed within IAU College and has as its mission to develop the student’s capacity to see. Students learn from a myriad of available resources including masterworks, architecture, figure and portrait work, landscape and cityscapes, and conceptual and multi- media design. Students have the opportunity to study fine arts in a region that inspired artist such as Enguerrand de Quarton, Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Alberto Giacometti.
Location: Aix-en-Provence is a small University town in the South of France, home to Paul Cezanne and Emile Zola.
