The School of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS) is continuing its Beyond JMS webinar series this fall, expanding upon what students learn in the classroom by bringing in leading professionals and experts from the media industry. With seven webinars scheduled for fall covering a range of popular industry topics, there is sure to be a webinar that piques all interests.

Speakers for the 2021 fall series include a mix of JMS alumni and qualified industry professionals. The webinars will cover designing in Canva, data journalism and the use of Python, creating portfolios and websites in Adobe Spark, amplifying stories from marginalized communities, launching and marketing a podcast, and how to successfully leverage social media influencers.

Dr. Temple Northup, Director of JMS, indicates that the speakers were chosen very intentionally. “I really wanted to bring in experts to talk about topics that are important for all our students to learn about, but may not necessarily be embedded within our curriculum,” he said.

Beyond JMS, first launched in January 2021, is an on-going webinar series that seeks to provide opportunities for insights, knowledge, conversations and skills for our alumni, students and professionals in San Diego and around the world. JMS celebrated a successful series launch with more than 1,000 attendees throughout the spring.

All webinars take place virtually on Fridays at noon. You do not have to be a JMS student to register and alumni and professionals are encouraged to join. To register for an upcoming webinar, visit
