DIRECTOR OF THE SCHOOL OF ART + DESIGN
The College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts at SDSU seeks a Director for its School of Art + Design, effective July 1, 2019 or as negotiated.
The Director of the School of Art + Design will provide visionary leadership while working collaboratively with the faculty and staff to foster innovative curricula and teaching; strong research and creative activity; and engagement within the university, in the community, and across the professions served by the School.
The Director is the chief administrator of the School and works with faculty, students and support staff in programs offering undergraduate and graduate degrees. The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts and represents the School to both on-campus and off-campus stakeholders. While retaining ultimate fiscal responsibility, the Director supervises and holds accountable the support personnel responsible for departmental budgets and for facilities management; coordinates class schedules and curricula; builds and sustains relationships with alumni and with philanthropic and corporate communities for fundraising; and develops and implements long-term strategic plans in consultation with faculty and staff through shared governance and mutual accountability. The Director will be the person primarily responsible for expressing a vision for the future of the School and guiding the development of curricula and fostering on- and off-campus relationships in order to achieve that vision. The successful candidate will bring professional values that strengthen inclusion, diversity, access, and equity across the broad constituencies served by the School.
The successful candidate will meet these qualifications:
- Hold a relevant terminal degree in one or more of the disciplinary areas of the School of Art and Design or an advanced degree combined with equivalent professional experience that justifies appointment as a full professor with tenure.
- A high profile record of university-level teaching and research/creative accomplishment or equivalent experience in institutions with national scope.
- Experience in academic administration or directing an art- or design-related organization or institution, and possess relevant management skills.
- A record of community engagement and the interpersonal skills and abilities needed to be effective in donor development and fundraising.
- A broad vision on innovative curricula development and management.
- A strong commitment to working with diverse student populations.

- A wide cultural frame of reference in the arts and humanities, encompassing art and design, as well as related fields.
- Successful experience in international / intercultural outreach.
- Ability to oversee operational staff members whose responsibilities include managing and maintaining varied art and design studios, a digital fabrication laboratory, multiple galleries, and classrooms.
- Leadership experience in appropriate professional organizations.
- Experience working with academic budgets and revenue sources.
- Demonstrable talent in consensus building, visioning, strategic planning, and implementation of related initiatives.
- Insight into global developments in the fields of art and design, and a vision for curricular development related to contemporary art making, emerging technologies, collaboration, and inclusivity.
- Demonstrated understanding of the distinct needs of different programs within the School and the ability to foster program strengths and potential to achieve the School’s mission.
- A commitment to transparency and to shared governance.
- An understanding of the responsibility of a public university to encourage and to support freedom of expression and academic freedom.
RANK AND SALARY
This position represents a faculty appointment with administrative responsibilities and eligible for appointment to the rank of full professor with tenure. The salary will be nationally competitive, based on the successful candidate's qualifications.
