ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (Tenure-Track): MUSIC EDUCATION (GENERAL/CHORAL)
The School of Music and Dance is seeking a full-time, assistant professor in a tenure track position with expertise in General/Choral Music Education.
The position requires the candidate to work collaboratively, teach, supervise, recruit, and manage all aspects of the undergraduate general/choral music education program. Teaching responsibilities will include Music Education practicum courses, Music Literature for Children, courses in music for elementary education majors, and other teaching duties that match the candidate’s qualifications, background, and interest. The candidate is expected to recruit outstanding students to the music program with preference to experience working with underrepresented populations. It is expected that the candidate maintain active and collaborative relationships with the public schools, community colleges, and university music education programs throughout the county and beyond. The candidate will also contribute to collaborative relationships across the School of Music and Dance. Active and sustained involvement in professional growth beyond the university is required to obtain tenure and promotion, as is excellence in teaching and participation in school governance.
A terminal degree in Music or Music Education is required. The successful candidate will possess teaching and research abilities at the highest level as well as comprehensive and current knowledge of music education pedagogy. Emphasis in general music methods and approaches (K-8), choral music leadership (K-12), and background in music and integrated arts curriculum for classroom teachers is required. A successful track record of music education teaching at the university level along with the ability to determine program effectiveness through student assessment is required. The candidate must have extensive experience with all levels (elementary through high school) of public school music programs, and demonstrated abilities in recruiting and retaining undergraduate students. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate experience working with students from underrepresented populations. The candidate should possess superior administrative and organization skills. The candidate must show evidence of an ongoing commitment to advancing the profession as reflected in an active music education research agenda, including a promising record of publications. Evidence of commitment to university and community collaborations is desirable including experience leading partnerships with all levels of public school music.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The San Diego State University Music Education Program trains undergraduate music majors to prepare them to enter the Credential Program in Music. This “fifth year” is a student teaching year and part of the State of California requirement towards earning a K-12 Single Subject Credential in Music. The Music Education Program serves underrepresented populations throughout San Diego county and partners with many school districts including San Diego Unified School District and Sweetwater Union High School District. The program is designed to place SDSU students into music classrooms early in their undergraduate program. The Music Education Fellowship program is a scholarship program funded by donors that supports selected undergraduates as they work with mentor teachers at public school sites for two semesters prior to entering student teaching. 100% of SDSU music education majors who complete their credential obtain employment.

The School of Music and Dance offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in music (BA, BM, MM, Advanced Graduate Artist Diploma) and dance (BA, BFA.)
