Lilyana Bekic, MFA student in Jewelry and Metals, won 1st prize at the 22nd Annual California State University Student Research Competition at CSU East Bay.

This was the first time this prestigious competition featured an Arts and Culture category and Bekic’s work, entitled “Desire,” set a very high standard for future competitors. The competition highlights the research and scholarly activities of students throughout the twenty-three campuses of the California State University system.

Seven students from PSFA were tapped for membership into Mortar Board on Sunday, April 20, 2008. Mortar Board is one of the most prestigious, senior honor societies on campus. The forty students selected campus wide for membership have distinguished themselves through their involvement in scholarship, leadership, and service.

ENS Students Place Third at Annual Nutrition Bowl
Jessica Dugan, Donald Kreckow, Margaret Shirkey and Mital Pandya represented SDSU at the 6th Nutrition College Bowl at CSU Northridge. SDSU placed third amongst ten teams and brought home $350 in scholarship funds for the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences.
Graphic Design Student’s Work Shines on Campus
Petra Ives
The work of Petra Ives, (senior, graphic design major), has been selected as the new logo for the Associated Students (AS). This is not Petra’s first artistic endeavor to be shown at SDSU. Her design work was also used for the recent Monty Awards invitation.
College Council Receives Aztec Achievement Award
The PSFA 2007-08 College Council was selected the Most Improved Council/Board at the Aztec Achievement Awards in May. The criteria included in the selection were: increased council and club participation, involvement in campus and community service activities and innovations in communication using Blackboard. President Ceara Sadler, Vice Presidents Alexander Jarman, Sarah Rossetto, Ronni Leonard, Katie McCown, Erica Draper, and Desmond Ho provided excellent executive leadership. Daniel Matthews, Deanna Betcher, Haley Anderson and Paul Klotz joined Sarah Rossetto as the Associated Students PSFA Representatives and provided a strong voice on all AS initiatives.
Outstanding College Council Members Honored
Patrick Bruton and Ceara Sadler
Ceara Sadler and Patrick Bruton were selected as the Most Outstanding Members of the PSFA 2007-2008 College Council. Ceara has been actively involved in leadership roles in the College Council for three years; most recently as Council President. Patrick has been involved in the Council for two years and was responsible for the creation of the organization “Success Enabled Pilots” (SEP). This year SEP held a highly successful energy conservation campaign.
Film Students Receive Emmy Nomination
Students in the Intermediate Video and TV Production class received an Emmy nomination for their work on the sitcom production “Three of a Kind”. The Emmy is for Outstanding Student Achievement for the San Diego/Pacific Southwest Chapter of the National Television Academy. This Chapter serves the San Diego area, Bakersfield, Oxnard, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, and Las Vegas, Nevada. Professor Tim Powell worked with the following students on the project: Nick Burger, Iris Caffin (Director/Producer), Ross Ching, Toni Comfort, Jason Esse, Matt Frank, Soheila, Ghorbani, Craig Oliver, Mike Roddy, Bonni Rooney, Gilly Rudolf, Jamie Schultz, Dane Tellinghausen, Brian Wheeler.
Vocal Students Take Top Awards
James Schindler and Renee Calvo
Renee Calvo won first prize ($2,500) and James Schindler placed second ($1,000) in the recent Virginia and Susan Hawk Vocal Competition held at the La Mesa Women’s Club. The competition provided scholarships to young opera and concert singers to further their studies. Both Renee and James are students of Mary MacKenzie in the School of Music and Dance.
Renee Calvo was also the winner of the San Diego Chorus, Sweet Adelines International Scholarship.
Victoria Robertson, (Artist Diploma) and Matthew Herriman (Vocal Performance) performed in the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus Young Artists Competition. Victoria won first prize and will have the opportunity to perform with the ensemble next season. Matthew was selected as the “Most Promising Vocalist”.
Cecilia String Quartet Receives Prestigious International Award
The Cecilia String Quartet, comprised of Sarah Nematallah, violin, Min-Jeong Koh, violin, Caitlin Boyle, viola, and Rebecca Wenham, cello, placed second in the highly competitive 6th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition and Festa in Osaka, Japan. The Quartet competed against 46 international ensembles during the weeklong competition.
Seven SDSU Students Receive NROTC Commissions

The Navy Reserve Officer Training Corp commissioned thirty-seven officers on May 23 on the campus of University of San Diego. Seven of the officers were SDSU students. Receiving their commissioning were: Ensigns Matthew Reed, William Berger, Joshua Coisman (see photo), Dalan Haas, James Liverman, Paul Reali and 2nd Lieutenants Alexander Melton and Ryan Retmier.
Military Science Reserve Officer Training Corp Commissions 2nd Lieutenants

Twelve cadets from the Department of Military Science received their commissions on Friday, May 16 at Mount Soledad National Park. Maximillia Soto, a Criminal Justice Administration student, was selected as the most outstanding graduate.
