Want to 'optimize' your fitness?
Couch potatoes and athletes alike can take advantage of services offered by SDSU's Center for Optimal Health and Performance (COHP), a facility for adults who want personalized service while working toward their fitness goals.
The center promotes healthy living, provides services unavailable in other fitness facilities, and gives SDSU students hands-on experience working with clients in a relaxed but professional setting.
Clients have access to exercise and personal training, nutrition counseling, bone health and body composition assessment, physiological testing and services such as blood chemistry and lipid analysis, biomarkers for cardiac disease ,and health seminars with personal support.
All services are offered at a competitive price by trained and certified physicians, faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students at both the campus center in Peterson Gym and an off-site location in the Sky Park area of Kearny Mesa.
The center also has testing and programs for competitive endurance athletes who want to get the most out of their training.
The COHP was founded in 1958 as the Adult Fitness Program (AFP) by Fred Kasch. In the 70s, the program was aimed at people with health problems, many of whom had suffered heart attacks. Gradually, services expanded to cater to all adults interested in obtaining or maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Advertising students take on blockbuster brands
Under the direction of Nick Lambesis, Communication 461 students have been transformed into advertising professionals.
The SDSU advertising creativity class has a list of clients that any agency would envy, including Qualcomm, Petco, Iomega, Roxy, Vans, Sony, Chicken of the Sea, Kashi, Mossy Nissan, TaylorMade Golf, Quiksilver, and South Coast Plaza.
The 80 seniors in the class created quite a buzz among their clients by trading in the books for a booming business. Lambesis himself is well known as the chairman and founder of The Lambesis Agency and is recognized for the role his agency played in helping Airwalk footwear become the third largest casual shoe company in the world.
Students in this class specialize in creating advertising campaigns for San Diego companies. After "experimenting" on a few small firms, they are ready to roll out the big guns with major companies and present their work in the form of finished, formal presentations.
“It's scary how smart and articulate they are, and I only give them two weeks to do the work," Lambesis says. Taking Airwalk from $20 million in sales to $250 million was a great ride, but making a difference in a young person's life is as good as it gets," he adds.
