Dr. Barbara Ainsworth,
professor in the Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences,
has been appointed to the President’s Council on Physical
Fitness and Sports’ (PSPFS) Science Board. She was selected
due to the significant contributions she has made to research and
science of physical activity, fitness, and health. One of
the responsibilities of the board is to make recommendations in
the areas of program development and evaluation
Dr. Ainsworth also recently received the 2006 Citation Award in
recognition of her original research contributions in physical activity
and public health, her commitment to mentorship in exercise science,
and her volunteer leadership in the American College of Sports Medicine.
She has a strong international reputation, works with the World
Health Organization in its International Physical Activity Surveillance
System, and has been an invited speaker at universities and meetings
around the globe. She has organized and led numerous conferences
and meetings on diverse topics related to physical activity and
public health. She has a long and esteemed history of leadership
and service in ACSM, and was Trustee, then Vice President, of ACSM
(1996-2001)
Rich Underwood is a part-time faculty
member at SDSU teaching Advanced Cinematography in the School of
Theatre, Television & Film, but for more than 20 years he has
been shooting and directing award-winning commercials. In
the February issue of DV (Digital Video) Magazine he chronicles
his role as director of photography in the soon to be aired reality
television show, Bluff. Underwood’s article,
High Stakes and High Def, written as a cover story,
gives a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to shoot an
entire season of shows on two ships during two 7-day cruises
He is also currently working on a book, Roll! News Shooting
Techniques, Ethics & the Video Journalist’s Intuition,
which is scheduled for publication in early 2007 by Focal Press,
a leading Media Technology book publisher. The book is written
for news camera people, photojournalists, and video journalists
of all levels who want to be competitive in their field and also
deepen their news shooting skills through the best practices of
others

Congratulations to the twenty faculty members and graduate
students in the School of Communication who will
be participating in the program at the Western States Communication
Association meeting February 18-21, in Palm Springs. Among the group,
graduate students Paul Pablo" Martin and Christina Smith, and
faculty members Valerie Renegar, George Dionisopoulos and Brian
Spitzberg all have research appearing on panels of three diferent
WSCA interest groups.
