Speech Communication Alumnus Honored

Jack Williams likes challenges and eagerly seeks them out with a passionate zeal; whether it be the New York Marathon, an Iditarod Race or fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. When Dean Joyce Gattas recently called Jack to ask his acceptance of the PSFA 2006 Alumni of Distinction award, nature had given him another challenge...facing the clean-up of his Florida home after the recent hurricanes. Nonetheless, this 1972 Speech Communication alumnus will be present at the Montys on March 25 at SDSU. Recently retired as the President and COO of Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises, Jack inspired students and industry leaders as the 3rd Conrad N. Hilton Distinguished Lecturer, a program of our Hospitality and Tourism Management Program. The Montys will be just one of many events during SDSU Month in March 2006.

Experience China

We are offering a unique opportunity to explore China with an educational and cultural tour commencing on May 22, 2006 and finishing on June 7, 2006. We want alumni and friends to join in this truly memorable experience to represent SDSU. Dr. Lilly Cheng, the Director of the Chinese Studies Institute will open doors and introduce us to opportunities not offered on commercial tours. We have carefully planned the trip to include major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai as well as small towns such as Wuzheng, Yicheng and Suzhou. One of the highlights of the trip is to take a Viking Cruise (r) (five-star luxury cruise) from the mountain city of Chongqing down the mother river of China, the famous Yangtze River.

In Memoriam

Two leaders in their fields have recently passed away. Both touched and inspired many faculty, staff and students at SDSU.

Noted Ethnomusicologist, Robert E. Brown passed away after a brief illness, at the age of 78. During his thirteen years at SDSU (1978-1981) he made significant strides including the initiation of the unique world music program and his Chairmanship of the School of Music and Dance. Noted for his advocacy for world peace through the performing arts, Dr. Brown worked with Carl Sagan on the Voyager Golden Record.

Allan H. Center recently passed away at the age of 93. Mr. Center's legacy to the public relations profession is truly notable and many students and practitioners in the PR Community will recognize his name as he wrote with colleagues Scott Cutlip and Glen Broom, the "bible" of public relations, Effective Public Relations. After a successful public relations career, Mr. Center was a Distinguished Resident Lecturer at SDSU where he and his wife Nancy established the Allen H. Center Public Relations Lectureship Endowment.
