Outstanding Faculty

Alumni Award for Outstanding Contribution to the University
Dr. David M. Dozier
Dr. David M. Dozier, School of Journalism and Media Studies

Dave Dozier has spent his 28 years of service at San Diego State University working tirelessly on behalf of students while remaining an active contributor to the field of communication and public relations.

Dave is a highly respected professor who regularly receives high evaluations from his students and was the founding Graduate Director of the School of Communication (1995-98). Dave has incorporated a service learning component into his public relations research methods class, providing students with real-world public relations experience as well as a valuable service to local government and nonprofit agencies. Dave was also instrumental in paving the way for the creation of the School of Journalism and Media Studies at SDSU, drafting a joint restructuring document that resulted in the School’s establishment during the 2007-08 academic year.

The author or co-author of over 50 books, book chapters, articles, and scholarly papers, Dave is the 1990 recipient of the Pathfinder Award from the Institute for Public Relations Research and Education for his contribution to original scholarly research in the field.

Dave earned his Ph.D. in communication research from Stanford University in 1978. Before joining the SDSU faculty in 1980 as an assistant professor of journalism he worked as a reporter and photographer for the Lassen Advocate in Susanville, California and served as a public information officer for the nonprofit West Side Planning Group in Fresno.

Faculty Spotlight

The College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts extends its sincere appreciation to eight faculty who are retiring, ending their time in the Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP), or beginning their FERP this year for their many years of loyal service to SDSU. Combined, this year’s retirees represent 278 years of education, service and mentoring to the University community! We commend them all on a successful career and thank them for their commitment to SDSU.
