COMMENCEMENT ISSUE - MAY 2007
Commencement is upon us once again. This year, approximately 9,646 students are eligible to participate in Commencement 2007 at San Diego State University. That number includes 7,404 bachelor's degree candidates, 2,361 masters' and 66 doctoral degree candidates, with 119 of those students who are double majors. The College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) will present the most candidates for graduation with 2,532 students.
The PSFA graduation ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 19, at 1:00 p.m., in Cox Arena on the SDSU campus. SDSU Commencement ceremonies will be broadcast live on Cox Cable, Channel 23; Cox North, Channel 18 (excluding Oceanside); and Time Warner Cable, Channel 19 beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19. LONGENECKER TO RECEIVE HONORARY DOCTORATE OF FINE ARTS AT PSFA CEREMONY Martha Longenecker's career in art is a many faceted design related to being an artist/craftsman, educator, and Founder/Director and President of the Mingei International Museum of World Folk Art. As Professor of Art, Ms. Longenecker taught history of ceramics, design courses, directed the gallery program, and supervised the student teachers during her thirty-five year tenure at San Diego State University which began in 1955 when she arrived to develop the ceramics program. Longenecker will receive her honorary doctorate of fine arts at the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts ceremony on Saturday, May 19 at 1 p.m.
HONORING
PSFA's BEST AND BRIGHTEST During the Commencement ceremony special recognition will be given to a select group of accomplished graduates. Each of the degree programs in the College has chosen its outstanding graduate, and each of these graduates has named a faculty member who was most influential in the academic career of the graduate. From among these students the Dean selects one outstanding graduate who is recognized for his/her contribution to the College as well as the University. This year's outstanding PSFA graduate is Brooke Hall, earning her degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management. She has selected Professor J. Jeffrey Campbell as his most influential faculty member. Board is a senior honor society, based on exemplary scholarship, leadership,

Three PSFA students received the prestigious "Quest for the Best
Award" at the 21st Vice Presidential Student Service Award on April
21. The "Quest for the Best Award" honors outstanding student
leaders who have typified and promoted the broader mission of the university
through development of leadership skills and community service.

Dan Cannon won first place in the Health, Nutrition, and Clinical Sciences graduate division at the CSU Student Research Competition held this past weekend at CSU Dominguez Hills. His study, Recruitment of Serratus Anterior (SA) as an Accessory Muscle of Ventilation During Graded Exercise was supervised by Dan Cipriani and Mike Buono. This is the second year that Dan has won first place at the CSU competition.

The Fitness Clinic for Individuals with Disabilities will be celebrating its 25th year in operation in September 2007. The Fitness Clinic currently located on the campus of San Diego State University has been self-supporting for 24 years. Initiated by Dr. Peter M. Aufsesser with a Federal grant the Fitness Clinic currently serves 65 individuals with severe physical and neuromuscular disabilities (age 8-98) and annually trains over 170 students majoring in Kinesiology who are entering the health related professions. The Fitness Clinic is one of only four programs of its type in the United States. It is well respected and has long standing relationships with many different constituencies in the community.
