9th Annual "Ginger" Award Recipient

The San Diego Art Institute presents the 9th Annual "Ginger" Award to Dr. Joyce Gattas.  Dr. Gattas embodies the spirit of the "Ginger" Award and it is fitting to recognize on April 28th at opening of the 49th International Awards Exhibition.

The "Ginger" award honors individuals or organizations for exceptional efforts in the visual arts in Southern California.  The recipient of the 9th annual award was nominated and unanimously approved by the San Diego Art Institute Board of Directors. 


Celebrating Steinbeck

You are invited to explore the works of John Steinbeck as part of a month long celebration of the author sponsored by the Colleges of Arts and Letters and Professional Studies and Fine Arts. 

The celebration, called an "Enduring Voice of California," runs through April and the first week in May.  It is made possible by a grant from the James Hervey Johnson Charitable Trust.

Migrant Farm Labor Exhibition
University Art Gallery April 2 through May 2

This is a detail of Dorothea Lange's "Migrant Mother," a 1936 photo of an immigrant mother with her children.

California's ongoing story of migrant farm workers and their families will be told through the art exhibition "Field Work: Documenting California's Migrant Farm Labor Experience 1935 to 2003".

Participating artist Louis Hock will present an illustrated lecture at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 13, in room 100 of Nasatir Hall. A reception with participating artists will follow from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the University Art Gallery.

The Grapes of Wrath

 The Tony Award-winning sweeping epic of the American experience, The Grapes of Wrath, comes to San Diego State University's Don Powell stage in April and May 2007.  John Steinbeck's landmark novel about Oklahoma farmers forced to become migrant workers in California won a Pulitzer Prize in 1940.
