Alumni Association Honors Professor Ida Rigby
Congratulations
to Dr. Ida Rigby, the recipient of the 2004-05 Monty Award for Outstanding
Faculty Contributions.
Professor Rigby has taught modern European Art History at SDSU for 28 years. She has an international reputation in German Expressionist studies, and has lectured curated exhibitions and chaired conference sessions throughout the United States. Dr. Rigby has been awarded research grants from government agencies in the United States, Canada and Germany. Dr. Rigby's contributions to the SDSU community have been many, including serving on the Graduate Council and chairing the University General Education Committee. She was instrumental in founding the SDSU Art Council, a community support group for the School of Art, Design and Art History. Dr. Rigby has served on many Boards in the San Diego community, and will serve as the interim director of the School of Art, Design and Art History for the 2004-05 academic year.

Artists Announced for the 2004 Mad Hatter's Ball & Art Auction
This year's Ball will be held on October 23, 6:00 pm at the Sheraton San Diego on Harbor Island. The event, which promises to be a delightfully fun evening, will feature live and silent auctions that include works of jewelry, paintings, ceramics, and furniture/woodworking designs donated by many acclaimed artists. Biba Schutz, Jesus Dominguez, Gail Roberts, Janet Cooling, Roman de Salvo, Richard Keely, Chris Lowe, Ann Mudge, John Rogers, Ernest Silva, and David Tisdale are just a few of the artists who have contributed works that will be auctioned at the event.
Guests
will dine on gourmet specialties, and the SDSU Jazz Band will perform throughout
the evening. Tickets are $150 per person for the biennial fundraising event,
which benefits the educational and scholarship programs of the School of
Art, Design and Art History at SDSU. Honorary Chairs of this year's Ball
are Eloisa and Chris Haudenschild.

SDSU Student Film Receives Kodak
Grant
An SDSU student film will be one of nine films featured at a screening
in Los Angeles, at the Museum of Contemporary Art on September 23 at 7:00
pm. Chad Clabaugh, and Jason Guzzado's film Change
of Address, a nine-minute comedy in which change brings redemption
to a man who made the wrong choice received the award for talented emerging
filmmakers. Congratulations to Chad and Jason!
SDSU Alumnus links Jazz Ensemble to Bolivia
Students
and faculty in the Jazz Studies program performed in Bolivia over the summer.
Sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Program of the American Embassy in La
Paz, Bolivia, the tour was made possible due to the efforts of SDSU graduate
Roland Schlieder, who currently serves as director of the Orquesta Sinfinoca
in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
The octet, comprised of faculty members Bill Yeager, co-leader and trombone, Kevin Delgado, co-leader and percussion, and Dave Pschaida, drums, Justin Grinnell, bass, Andrew Elstob, trumpet, Melonie Sacalamitao, piano and vocals and Christopher Hollyday, woodwinds, spent ten days in the cities of Santa Cruz, Cochambamba, La Paz and Oruro. In addition to performing, the ensemble conducted master classes and workshops with local jazz bands and the Youth Symphony Orchestra in Bolivia.
FACULTY HIGHLIGHTS
Gail Roberts (Art, Design
and Art History) has works included in an exhibition entitled Speculative
Terrain: Recent Views of the Southern California Landscape from San Diego
to Santa Barbara that has been traveling to three institutions
in Southern California throughout 2003 and 2004. The final exhibition will
be September 11-November 13, 2004 at the Laband Art Gallery, Loyola Marymount
University, Los Angeles, CA
Dr. Jeanne Nichols (Exercise and Nutritional Sciences)
was inducted as a Fellow into the American College of Sports Medicine in
June 2004.
Dr. Thom McKenzie (Exercise
and Nutritional Sciences) gave two keynote presentations at sport science
conferences in Europe: European Congress of Sport Sciences held in Paris,
France; and Pediatric Physical Activity in Porto, Portugal.
Dr. James Yaggie (Exercise and Nutritional
Sciences) received the Ernst Jokl Fellow Award for outstanding scholarly
accomplishments in the field of rehabilitation at the 2004 American Kinesiotherapy
Conference in Memphis.
Dr. Barbara Ainsworth (Exercise
and Nutritional Sciences) served as a Distinguished Scholar at the University
of Kansas Medical School in June 2004, and gave a presentation about the
role of tailored interventions to increase physical activity behaviors
in minority populations.
ALUMNI NEWS
Tal Vigderson (Telecommunications & Film,
1988) is managing director of Icebox, an independent animation production
company. He has recently co-produced a Sony Pictures Classics release,
and was Executive Producer on National Lampoon presents Mr. Wong,
an internationally released DVD.
Daniel Francisco (Journalism,
1990) has recently been named external affairs manager for Intel Corporations
California Public Affairs team and is responsible for managing Intel's
media and communications strategies for the Sacramento region. In his new
role, Francisco will also own key external stakeholder relationships and
advise on local public policy issues.
Kira Soltanovich (Dramatic
Arts, 1996) works as a stand-up comedian in Los Angeles. For the past two
years she has been a series regular on the hit hidden camera show "Girls
Behaving Badly" on the Oxygen network.
Robin Raecker (MA 1997, Public
Administration) has been named Imperial County's new Public Health Director.
Raeker has worked for Imperial County for more than 13 years, and has held
positions as assistant director and interim head. She helped establish
the emergency medical services agency within the health department.
Edgar Ruiz (MA 2000, Public
Administration) is the Program Director of the Border Legislative Conference,
a binational program of the Council of State Governments aimed at enhancing
cooperation and collaboration among state legislators of the 10 U.S. -
Mexico border states.
Chris Boyd (Theatre Arts,
2004) will begin a two-year intensive MFA degree program at the Alabama
Shakespeare Festival this fall. The program allows him to earn his MFA
degree and receive his equity card. The degree is accredited through the
University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa
