ART PROFESSOR'S SCULPTURE DESIGNS PICKED FOR INTERNATIONAL PROJECT

Robert Mansfield's sculpture designs titled Geometric Rhapsody for Suzhou have been selected from a broad range of proposals submitted by architects and sculptors throughout China for construction in the city of Suzhou. Mansfield's sculptures were selected by a team of judges comprised of political and civic leaders, artists, engineers, and others and is slated for completion in May of this year to coincide with the visit to Suzhou of Hu Jin Tao, the President of China, and President S.R. Nathan, the President of Singapore.

The sculptures, measuring up to 14 meters high, are to be constructed in welded steel and will include a laser feature which has been developed through consultation with Professor William Tong of the department of Chemistry in the College of Science at SDSU. The sculptures will be engineered for placement on top of four buildings in an area that is being developed jointly by China and Singapore into a high tech avenue with multinational high-rise buildings, parks and gardens. Besides the laser feature, which is planned to form a light canopy above the avenue between the sculptures, each of the sculptures are to be painted in metallic enamel and lit with programmed lighting systems.

Picture of athletics program logoThe Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences is honoring a distinguished alumnus of the Athletic Training program at SDSU- James Collins, Head Athletic Trainer for the San Diego Chargers. The community-wide event will be held on March 25, from 6-8 PM at the Radisson Hotel in Mission Valley, and will feature a keynote presentation by Collins, followed by a reception. The Athletic Training Program at SDSU began in 1964 with one athletic training class and two athletic training interns in the athletic training room. Today the program has over 65 active students gaining clinical experience at five different clinical settings, including SDSU, USD, UCSD, SD Mesa City College, and Grossmont College.

Graduates from the SDSU program have saturated the employment market in the San Diego area, and have infused the nation in a variety of athletic training career settings. Many graduates have also pursued graduate opportunities in Physical Therapy, Medicine, Chiropractic, and Physician Assistant Programs.

SDSU STUDENTS GAIN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE THROUGH RUSSIAN STUDY PROGRAM

Picture of John Cleary

John Cleary

For the past three years, John Cleary, a part-time faculty member in
the School of Public Administration and Urban Studies, has traveled with a group of students to Russia to participate in the SDSU Russian Criminal Justice Program in Moscow. The annual College of Extended Studies Study Tour is held in conjunction with Moscow State University (MSU), which has been called the Harvard of the former Soviet Union. Each year the number of students who participate increases and last year the number rose to 23 students. The comparative law course allows any interested student, even those who are not criminal justice majors, to get an on-scene evaluation of how the Russian Constitution, Criminal Code, and Code of Criminal Procedure actually function. In addition to the required hours of course study, the students are given a basic orientation in Russian each day and get to participate in both professional and cultural activities.

Because of the program's success, plans are being made for law students from Moscow State University (MSU) and the Russian Academy of Justice (RAJ) to participate in a month-long program on American Criminal Justice at SDSU this summer. The course will be taught in English, and the students will live with American families.

SCHOOL OF THEATRE, TELEVISION, AND FILM HOSTS 21st ANNUAL DESIGN/PERFORMANCE JURY

The 21st annual Design/Performance Jury will take place on Friday, March 26, 2004, from 9 am to 2:30 pm in the Experimental Theatre at SDSU. As part of the inaugural year of the School, theatre students will present their projects in two groups; session 1 from 9 am to 10:30 am, and session 2 from 10:30 am to 12 noon. In the afternoon session from 1pm to 2:30 pm film students will present their work on the same text as a short film.

The play from which the students will present their projects this year is Edward Albee's Finding the Sun, and the jurors will be Martin Benson, artistic director of the South Coast Repertory Theatre; Judith Dolan, Tony Award-winning costume designer; John Iacovelli, set designer for theatre, television, and film; James Moody, lighting designer and author; Rosina Reynolds, actor and director; and SDSU's own, Marion Ross.

The jury is composed of professionals who have experience in both theatre and the media. For example, Ms. Ross is known for her performances at the Old Globe as well as her role as the mother in Happy Days. John Iacovelli designs for theatre, but comes to us after designing the TV series Ed, and James Moody has done extensive work in theatre, television, and rock concerts. He is also the author of several books about the practice and business of lighting design.

The Design/Performance Jury is free and open to the public. We encourage you to come and see the work of our talented students and listen to professionals talk about their art.

Received the PSFA Dean's Award

The School of Art, Design and Art History recently held its annual award ceremony and reception to honor the students and awardees of the 2004 Student Award Exhibition. The annual exhibition displays upper division and graduate student artwork submitted by nomination of the full-time faculty of the School.

The exhibition began in spring 1999 to demonstrate the University's support of artistic excellence and diversity in the students' artwork. This year, 60 students submitted their works, and forty-six pieces from 38 students were selected and exhibited for three weeks in the Flor y Canto and Everett G. Jackson student art galleries. The President, Provost, PSFA Dean, and others from the campus community then selected their favorite work, and the students were awarded a monetary prize at the award ceremony. Since its inception, the purchase awards have grown in number, and so has the number of permanent art collections throughout the SDSU campus.
