"Envision San Diego: The Creative Community"

On December 8, 2003, "Envision San Diego: The Creative Community" a forum created to promote civic engagement and journalism was announced. SDSU's International Center for Communications, KPBS, and SignOnSanDiego are partners in this new venture designed to make the public more aware of important policy issues that affect the region and encourage citizens to become involved. Envision San Diego intends to achieve this by a series of television and radio programs, and on-line discussions. You can participate in the discussions by logging on to: http://www.signonsandiego.com/communities/envision/index.html.

On March 31, during SDSU Month, a town hall meeting will be held in the KPBS studios and a special one-hour public affairs program created that will include the steering committee's ideas for ensuring San Diego's success into the 21st century. For more information about Envision San Diego please contact John Eger, Executive Director of SDSU's International Center for Communications at 619-594-6933.

ALUMNI PROFILE
Robert Morgan,
MFA, Set Design 1999

Picture of Robert MorganRob Morgan is fast making a name for himself in the field of scenic design. Rob, who received his MFA degree in Set Design from SDSU in 1999, is currently a resident designer at the Denver Center Theatre Company in Denver, Colorado, where he designs 2 to 3 shows a year in an 11 show season, featured in three theatre spaces. While working as a painter and carpenter at the San Jose Repertory Theatre during the 1993-94 season he met Ralph Funicello who had been invited there to consult on the design of a new space. Professor Funicello had a tremendous impact on him. He recalls, "I jumped at the chance to assist Ralph for a weekend and had a marvelous time." Rob went on to work at the Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis for a few years, and when the time came to select a graduate school, he chose SDSU because Ralph Funicello taught here.

Rob's portfolio boasts scenic designs for productions such as Lobby Hero, Almost Heaven, Bernice and Butterfly, Copenhagen, The Dazzle, A Christmas Carol, Dirty Blond, and Bus Stop, to name a few. Most recently, he designed the world premiere of a new play The Subject Tonight is Love at the Alliance Theatre Company in Atlanta. His thesis design for The Kentucky Cycle was included as part of the United States student exhibit at the 1999 Prague Design Quadrennial in the Czech Republic.

"My time spent at SDSU were some of the happiest moments of my life thus far," he said. "Ralph became (and still is) an amazing mentor, friend, and colleague. The contributions of others that shaped my student (and thereby professional) life were incredible professors like Beeb Salzer, Loren Schreiber, Nick Reid, and Craig Wolf. I hope to return to San Diego someday and personally thank them all."
