SDSU FILM STUDENTS RECEIVE RECOGNITION AT EMMYS!

Congratulations to four SDSU film students Junvi Ola, Alex Farnsley, Mariah Bieber, Jon Walsh, who received scholarships from the San Diego Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The annual Southwestern Emmy Awards in San Diego was held on June 21, 2003. Alex Farnsley, graduate student in Television, Film and New Media Production, took home a Student Emmy in the Informational category for the half-hour documentary, "Shadow Children: Five Stories from the Street." The film was produced in SDSU's Production Center for Documentary and Drama as part of an ongoing series on the life and times of San Diego County. It is a follow up to the Center's multi-award-winning 1994 production, "A Safe Place," about homeless kids.

 

 

DR. THOM MCKENZIE RECEIVES HIGHEST HONOR...

Picture of Thom MckenzieCongratulations to professor Thom McKenzie, Exercise and Nutritional Sciences who was recently selected by the Association Internationale des Ecoles Superieures d'Education Physique (AIESEP) Board of Directors to receive the Association's highest honor, the IOC President's Prize.

The honor is given to an individual or individuals who have made a significant impact through their research, scholarship and/or program development in sport pedagogy. Professor McKenzie has shown a rare combination of all three, scholarship, research, and program development for more than two decades and continues to be a significant world leader in youth fitness through his research, publications and keynote presentations.

 

The award of $10,000 will be presented to Professor McKenzie on August 2, 2003, at the closing of the next World Congress to be held at Endicott College in Boston, Massachusetts. Feel free to send Dr. McKenzie a note or e-mail with congratulations.

 

 

KATHY NAJIMY, SDSU ALUMNA STARS IN DIRTY BLONDE AT THE OLD GLOBE

Theatre alumna Kathy Najimy stars in the current production of Dirty Blonde, by Claudia Shear at The Old Globe. Dirty Blonde is a hybrid comedy that is part Mae West docu-drama, part love story and part vaudeville. Najimy, stars as Jo, an aspiring actress, who admires Mae West for her determination and feminist accomplishments. Moreover, the play takes on a comic look at the incredible life of Mae West and invites the audience to take a closer look at the woman behind this Hollywood legend.

 

Najimy made her Broadway debut as Jo, and returns to San Diego, her native city, to perform the same role in the Southern California debut of Dirty Blonde on Sunday, July 20th. Najimy is a veteran to the theatre, television and film industries. She has appeared in such films as Sister Act, Soap Dish, Hocus Pocus and Hope Floats. On stage she has not only starred in Dirty Blonde on Broadway when she took over the role from Claudia Shear, she also received an Obie Award for The Kathy & Mo Show, which she produced and wrote. On television, she's the voice of Peggy on the animated series King of the Hill, played "Olive" on Veronica's Closet, and has made guest appearances on Chicago Hope, Ellen and many others.

TFM GRADUATE STUDENT PARTICIPATES AT THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

Television, Film and New Media Production graduate student Neil Kendricks was accepted into the Kodak American Pavilion Intern Program at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. Neil was assigned to work as a videographer for LA-based documentary filmmaker Jay Miracle. Neil assisted with documenting roundtable discussions and series of events held at the American Pavilion. This occasion provided a wonderful opportunity for Neil to see and explore the surrounding areas as the film festival unfolded. He attended screenings, networked and participated in festival activities. In addition, Neil's first hand experience at the film festival gave him great insight to how the international film industry operates in terms of the buying and selling of films.

Neil will graduate from SDSU next year with a MA in Television, Film, and New Media Production.

 

 

BARBARA AINSWORTH JOINS THE ENS DEPARTMENT

Barbara Ainsworth joins SDSU as the new chair of the Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences. Dr. Ainsworth comes to SDSU from the University of South Carolina where she was a Professor in the Norman J. Arnold School of Public Health and the Director for the Prevention Research Center. Her teaching and research activities are related to physical activity, fitness and health with special emphasis on how public health strategies can be used to assess current levels of activity and promotes changes in physical activity at community levels. Dr. Ainsworth attended the University of Minnesota and received the following postgraduate degrees: MA in Education, Ph.D in Exercise Physiology, and MPH in Epidemiology. Please welcome Dr. Answorth to the SDSU "family".

 

 

TFM PROFESSOR'S DOCUMENTARY ON ENCINITAS' FLOWER FAMILIES DEBUTS ON KPBS ON MONDAY, JULY 21 AT 10:30 P.M.

Picture of Mark FreemanSDSU Professor Mark Freeman's latest documentary on the flower family businesses in Encinitas will air on KPBS on July 21st at 10:30p.m. Families and Flowers, reports on several generations of flower growers and shares the joys and challenges of making beautiful flowers bloom in the 21st century. Freeman goes inside the local flower business and follows the lives of three flower families who face the on-going challenges of the economic climate and high priced real estate market in San Diego.

 

Families and Flowers was produced and directed by Mark Freeman. Freeman is a documentary film and video maker, and is an Assistant Professor of Television, Film and New Media in the School of Theatre, Television and Film at San Diego State University. SDSU GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDENTS HONORED AT 2003 AIGA STUDENT PORTFOLIO REVIEW

Congratulations to SDSU graphic design students Genevieve Salakian, Lynn Lee, Livna Lev-Ram, Joey Sadile, and Ralph Acosta who participated and were honored by the San Diego Student Portfolio Review for their work. The event was sponsored by the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) San Diego and the honors were presented on May 31, 2003 at the historic No Wonder! building in downtown San Diego. There were approximately 50 - 60 students and as many professional designers who participated in the review. Genevieve Salakian was awarded first place and received a $1,000 award in the overall portfolio category. Other SDSU graphic design students who received honors were Lynn Lee, Honorable Mention in Branding/Identity; Livna Lev-Ram, Honorable Mention in Photography; Joey Sadile, Honorable Mention in Typography; and Ralph Acosta, Honorable Mention in Typography. Lynn, Livna, Ralph, and Joey each received an award of $250.

 

The American Institute of Graphic Arts is the national non-profit organization that promotes excellence in graphic design. Founded in 1914, the AIGA advances the graphic design profession through competitions, exhibitions, publications, professional seminars, educational activities, and projects in the public interest.
