Joyce M. Gattas, Ph.D.
Dean

Joyce M. Gattas has served San Diego State University as Dean of the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts since July 1989. In her role as Dean of the College, she manages eleven diverse departments/schools which include: Aerospace Studies; Art, Design and Art History; Child and Family Development; Communication; Military Science; Music and Dance; Naval Science; Exercise and Nutritional Sciences; Public Administration and Urban Studies; Recreation, Parks and Tourism; and Theatre. Her newest program is a joint degree with the College of Business in Hospitality and Tourism Management. The College has over 7,000 majors and 550 faculty and staff. Nine centers and research institutes are also resident in the College providing students with opportunities for firsthand research experience. They are: the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, the Sanford I. Berman Institute for Effective Communication and General Semantics, the International Center for Communications, the Institute for Leisure Behavior, the Production Center for Documentary and Drama, the Institute of Public and Urban Affairs, the Center for International Media and Communication Education and the Institute for Built Environmental and Comparative Urban Research. The College jointly shares responsibility for the Institute for International Security and Conflict Resolution with the Colleges of Arts and Letters and Sciences, and for the Center for Hospitality and Tourism Management with the College of Business.

Before assuming her current managerial position, Dr. Gattas taught at California State Universities, at Long Beach and at Hayward. Following her career as a college professor, Dr. Gattas was the Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs at San Diego State University. In that position, she handled all faculty personnel matters, negotiated contracts and agreements, and represented the University in grievances, collective bargaining, and other legal matters.

Dr. Gattas is active in community and professional organizations, including the San Diego Film Commission Board of Directors (Chair); the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors (Chair); Commissioner for the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture (Vice Chair); California Ballet Board of Directors; KPBS Advisory Board; Holiday Bowl Red Coat Committee; SDSU International Communications Council; Rotary Club of San Diego; Board of Trustees for the Multiple Sclerosis Society (Past President); and numerous art boards. In the past, Dr. Gattas has also served on the following: Board of Directors for La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary; Mayor’s City of the Future Committee; Chair of the Art & Sol Campaign; and Chair, Super Bowl '98, '03 Host Committee.

Dr. Gattas was the recipient of San Diego Business Journal's Women Who Mean Business Award and the Woman of Achievement Award, and was listed in San Diego Magazine's Who's Who in 1994. She was selected as one of 50 San Diegans to watch in 2000.

Dr. Gattas is a graduate of the Institute for Educational Management, Harvard University, and holds a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of California at Berkeley, and an M.A. and a B.S. degree from the University of New Mexico.
