Randi McKenzie, M.Ed.

Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, PSFA

PSFA Faculty Mentor, Faculty-Student Mentoring Program

Lecturer, Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences

Randi McKenzie received her master’s degree in Education with

an emphasis in physical education from Bowling Green State

University.  Her undergraduate work, at Kent State University,

was in health, physical education and psychology.  She has

taught university students for over 30 years and has been

highly involved in teaching, coaching and advising.  For the

past 11 years, she has been involved in developing San Diego

State University’s Faculty-Student Mentoring Program.

Under her direction, the program has significantly changed

and has developed into a nationally recognized program

(Noel-Levitz, Retention Excellence Award, 2001).  She has

presented at numerous national conferences and has received

positive recognition for her work in the mentoring program.

In addition to formerly directing the university’s program,

she is also the Faculty Mentor for the College of Professional

Studies and Fine Arts FSMP.  As a faculty member in the

Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences, her

responsibilities involve teaching liberal studies students

about teaching physical education to children and mentoring

the department’s graduate teaching assistants.

Randi is an involved faculty member and has served the

university on numerous organizations and committees:

(President’s Community Council on Diversity, the Provost’s

Retention Council, University Senate, Student Grievance

Committee, Student Affairs Committee, adhoc committee on

diversity and equity, mortar board, and faculty fellow in

Maya Hall, etc).

Her hobbies include working with students, racquetball, art,

and theatre.  She was a competitive fencer for 25 years and was

ranked second in the nation in women’s sabre fencing.  She also

taught and coached archery and was the private instructor to

the governor of Baja California for six years.  Her newest hobby

is learning to play the piano—something she has wanted to do

for 50 years.
