Center for Optimal Health and Performance
Barbara Ainsworth, Director
The Center for Optimal Health and Performance (COHP), formerly
known as the Adult Fitness Program (AFP), was founded in
1958 by Dr. Fred Kasch, an exercise and nutritional science
(ENS) professor for over 30 years. In 2004, COHP opened
off-campus facilities located in the San Diego State University
Foundation building on Sky Park Court in Kearny Mesa. COHP
offers services by ENS faculty and students in collaboration
with the Graduate School of Public Health for SDSU and San
Diego communities. The purpose of COHP is to: (1) Offer
a service program of physical activity and exercise/nutrition
education with the major emphasis on helping individuals
adopt and maintain healthy lifestyle practices related particularly
to cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health; (2) Provide
state of the art physiologic testing to meet the needs of
individuals and researchers in the San Diego area; (3) Afford
graduate students and faculty associated with the program
an outlet through which master's theses and other research
projects may examine the role of physical activity on various
aspects of health, disease, and aging; (4) Provide an educational
medium through which graduate (and undergraduate) students
can learn and apply exercise physiology concepts. Services
offered at the Sky Park location include: Nutritional counseling,
bone density and body composition scans, physiological testing
and other health assessments as well as personal training.
The Group Exercise Program is offered on the SDSU campus
which is ideal for Faculty and Staff to get a good workout
without having to leave campus and drive to another location.
