JOHN BALDESSARI RECEIVES HONORARY DOCTORATE OF FINE ARTS DEGREE IN 2003 |
Born in National City, CA in 1931, John Baldessari studied
art at San Diego State University from 1949 through 1957,
receiving both his BA and MA degrees from SDSU. Following
completion of his Master’s degree, Mr. Baldessari
began to develop his mature painting style, incorporating
letters, words and photographs into his works. His work
continued to evolve, and he began working simultaneously
in printmaking, film, video, installation, sculpture and
photography. Because of his unique and pioneering visual
research, Mr. Baldessari is widely respected as one of
the leading figures in interdisciplinary art studies.
In
recognition of his academic and professional achievements,
he received the College of Art Association’s Lifetime
Achievement Award in 1999; the California Governor’s
Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts in 1997;
and the prestigious Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1988.
Also in 1988, SDSU honored him with its Distinguished Alumni
Award. His works have been shown in one-person and group shows
in the United States and around the world for more than four
decades. They are included in many permanent museum collections
including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Stedelijk
Museum of Modern Art, Amsterdam, Holland; the Kunstmuseum,
Basel, Switzerland; the Australian National Gallery; the Museum
of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and Chicago; Whitney Museum
of Art, New York; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New
York. Mr. Baldessari is currently Professor of Interdisciplinary
Studio Art at UCLA.
